New Firearms Regulation Petitions

More information has come to light with the recent OIC gun ban implemented by the government.  The legal team for the CSAAA (The Canadian Sporting Arms and Ammunition Association) has released a Statement that many 10 gauge and 12 gauge shotguns will fall under the ban as their barrel diameter may exceed the 20 mm requirement under section 95 of the OIC.  You can read more details at the CSAAA website here:
https://www.csaaa.org/blair-bans-12-gauge-10-gauge-shotguns-and-hunting-rifles/?fbclid=IwAR3BbwlPTHxDRFSgySWvMZwuv-sVQaFA0ct1w3ICorWNnufLt9ZGqUdw4Ww
if the CSSA site is overwhelmed also here:
http://wildboarcanada.ca/12g.pdf
Also please note a government petition has again started to request the OIC be reversed.  As this ban seems to affect more than just sport shooters but also bird hunters may be affected it is in all of our best interests to do what we can.  Anyone can sign this petition as there is no age limit.  The only restriction is each person must have their own email address.  Share the link with everyone you know.

Please ensure you read the published gazette as well as the CSAAA release above to ensure you are in compliance with the law.

New Firearms Regulation Notice

Last week the Federal Government forced through changes to our firearm laws through an Order In Council (OIC).  The TSF executive suggest you review which firearms were affected by reading the published Gazette that the government has released.  The firearms listed are now immediately classified as prohibited firearms which cannot be transported or used at the range.  Included firearms include both those that were restricted and non-restricted.   It should be noted that many 12 gauge shotguns have a bore diameter greater than 20mm, so this ban also affects bird hunters.

As the executive for the TSF, we cannot answer any questions you have as the only information we have at this time is what is published in the the gazette and press releases.  There is a 2 year amnesty period where possession is allowed until a “buyback” program is to be put in place.  This “buyback” has not yet passed parliament.  The firearm advocacy groups, CCFR, NFA, CSSA are releasing further details continually.  Please visit their websites and social media for further information.

Project Mapleseed

Project Mapleseed is returning to Taber. This year there will be 2 sessions, August 17 & 18. Registration link will be shared when available.
Project Mapleseed is an apolitical rifle marksmanship training program that focuses on teaching traditional rifle marksmanship from standing, sitting/kneeling, and prone positions in a one day shooting clinic termed a "Mapleseed". We are a non-profit, all volunteer run organization committed to helping Canadians develop fundamental marksmanship skills and in the safe handling of firearms .
Why should you participate?
Project Mapleseed is challenging, educational, engaging and fun! We want to share our proud history and build a solid foundation for growth. Project Mapleseed’s goal is to introduce current and future firearm enthusiasts to essential safety and marksmanship skills along with sharing the important role of firearms in Canadian history. In sharing this history, we hope to encourage these individuals to help preserve our firearms heritage and freedoms in Canada.
How do you get started?
Project Mapleseed is open to shooters of all ages. The minimum you need is a .22 rifle, 400 rounds of ammunition and a teachable attitude. Mapleseed is open to all calibers and sight types including scopes. The .22LR semi-automatic, magazine-fed rifles are the most commonly seen for their ease of use during the mandatory magazine changes and low ammo cost. Bring what you have, the shooting fundamentals taught apply to the shooter not their rifle. The goal is to learn and have fun. Subscribe today to find out more about Project Mapleseed and the upcoming training events near you and how you can get involved.

Promptly on March 1st/2020 all memberships that have not been renewed will have their fob deactivated and the renewal will cost $125 at that point. Also, at our AGM the members in attendance had a discussion on whether the TSF should continue to use Paypal as a payment choice. Starting March 1st/2020 the TSF will no longer be using Paypal as a payment method. Please be advised that we will still accept cheque, cash, or Etransfer. The TSF wishes to congratulate Dave Johansen for accepting the nomination and subsequently being voted in as our new president. Dave was one of our Vice Presidents which left that position open for nominations. We would also like to congratulate Ben Elfring for accepting the nomination and subsequently being voted in as our new 1st Vice President. We know you will both do a great job.

The TSF would also like to convey our thanks to Morgan Rockenbach who finished his term as President. Some of you may not know but Morgan has been involved with the formation of the TSF since it was just an idea. He has done an exemplary job in leading the TSF to the successful organization it is today. Without people like Morgan projects as large as our Shooting Range would not be possible. New Incentive for 2020

We are launching an incentive for all members. Starting Jan. 1/2020 we will be adding a new field to our online registration. The field asks if any of our range members had recommended them to join. If so they are asked to provide the name of that member. For each new member signed up, the current member that recommended them will have their name entered in a draw for a fantastic prize at the end of the year. We will be announcing what the prize is soon. This new incentive will run all year. Members of the TSF executive are not eligible for this incentive.

Range Flag Safety Protocol

We have been experiencing a lack of use by members of the safety flags out at the range. Members using the range are reminded to use the RED and GREEN safety flags and drop down signs that are positioned at the entrance to each shooting range. Make sure the RED flag is always displayed when the range is in use. Also make sure the drop down sign is displaying it’s RED side. When you leave and the range is not being used please remember to replace the RED flag with the GREEN flag indicating that that range is not in use and position the drop down sign to display the GREEN side. We would like to thank all members for their attention to this matter.

Reminders to all persons using the TSF Shooting Range

Please be aware that anyone using the temporary skeet range must not change the direction of the launcher. It has come to our attention that some individuals have been moving the launcher in a direction which allows shotgun pellets and clays to fly over the berms of the other ranges making an unsafe situation for other shooters. The direction of all shooting at the skeet range MUST be directed ONLY in a North , North West direction. Failure to adhere to this request may result is a loss of your membership. The TSF strives to make the Shooting Range a safe facility for all shooters.

There is NO shotgun use allowed on the following ranges: 50m, 100m, 200m, 600m, and Cowboy Action Range. Shotgun use IS, allowed on the temporary trap range. Shotgun use is also allowed in the North East corner of the Action Range which has been nicknamed the Zombie range (Action Range 4C) although regular shells are prohibited there. Only SLUGS may be used on the Zombie range. The TSF thanks you for your adherence to the range rules.

Range remains open to shooting. Anyone found in contravention of this rule, including shooters who have consumed
alcohol immediately prior to arriving at the Range, or appear to be impaired from any source, may be permanently
banned from the Range.”

TSF Youth Group Volunteers Needed

The Taber Shooting Foundation’s Youth Group is looking for volunteers!

The youth group runs events on a bi-weekly basis, during the warm months at the Taber Shooting Foundation’s range, and volunteers are expected to be able to attend a large portion of these events. We understand that family and work come first, but manpower is often our largest issue at our events, so we are looking for volunteers who are able to attend our events as often as possible. We try and schedule our event no less that 2 weeks in advance.

We ask that volunteers have both their PAL and have completed the Taber Shooting Foundation’s RSO course. These are important as we will be handling firearms and teaching safety to youth participants.
The youth committee operates largely electronically via Facebook and communicates mostly by email and/or FB messenger, all volunteers are expected to have some online presence to stay connected with our efforts.

During the winter months we are looking to host events at the indoor pistol range with a frequency yet to be determined. As well as working on our focus and programing for the upcoming outdoor season.

We ask all persons wanting to join the youth committee join our Facebook group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/TSFYouthGroup/) and message either Shane Bonner or David Johansen, or email TSFYouthGroup@gmail.com

Thanks;

TSF Youth Group

Mapleseed Shoot Early Registration

Registration is open for the Project Mapleseed shoot on Aug 4 at the range.  They have given Members of the TSF a 7 day advance notice before public posting on their website.  Below is  the pre-registration link

https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/project-mapleseed-aug-4th-2018-at-tabor-shooting-foundation-tabor-sports-shooting-complex-tickets-47447174777

Project Mapleseed is an apolitical rifle marksmanship training program that focuses on teaching traditional rifle marksmanship from standing, sitting/kneeling, and prone positions in a one day shooting clinic termed a “Mapleseed“.  We are a non-profit, all volunteer run organization committed to helping Canadians develop fundamental marksmanship skills and in the safe handling of firearms

For more information about Project Mapleseed visit:

Range Work Day July 7th

We will be having another Range Work Day on July 7th.  All help is greatly appreciated. Things are really progressing well at the Range.  The 600 m is just about finished.  The 200 m will be done probably next week, if the weather holds.  The golf cart shed is coming along, as the volunteers get time.

We came up with this list of improvements:

—-put up downed traffic signs on roadway
—-green Range flags need to be replaced with durable materials.
—-50 m range shed needs to be pressure washed as well as toilet interior
—-the shed posts and the toilets need to be painted.  There is white tremclad in the TRC for the posts. Toilet interior paint will need to be purchased at Home Hdw and brushes can be picked up at the dollar store.
—- there needs to be a couple more ceasefire signs ordered by Derrick.
—-each range needs at least one good quality broom and dustpan.  Anyone know a cleaning supply company that would donate this?
—-the steps on the gravel slope of the 600 m need to relocated to the east entrance
—-Jake Bergen needs to install the handicap ramp on the south entrance of the 600 m
—-the MD needs to put down asphalt on the lane from the parking lot to the 100 m as well as the cart paths down each side of 600 m
—-an entrance gate, similar to the one on the 50 m Range needs to be built at the entrance to the 200 m in order to restrict vehicle access
—-the weeds etc at the main gate entrance need mowing
—-more target stands (both fixed and portable)need to constructed for the 50/200&600m Ranges. There is lots of lumber out there to use.
—-the target backstops on the 100 m need lots of repair.
—-gun racks are needed in each shelter
—-seating benches are needed in the 600 and 200 m shelters just like the ones in the 50 or 100 m. Brackets, bench frames and cover boards are in the TRC and 100 m shelter.
—-all the scrap lumber around the TRC and piled by the Skeet houses needs to be hauled to the dump.  Cory Armfelt needs to be contacted to arrange permission to haul to the landfill.
—-Target boards for the portable targets should be precut and and placed on each range for shooters to install when needed.  Full sized sheets should be placed under each shelter for the same reason
—-the golf carts need to be serviced. I believe we have a few mechanics that might help get them operable.  If you know who, invite them to work on the carts
—-the approach off the highway and near the fob reader needs some gravel spread

Notice to all TSF Members

NOTICE TO ALL MEMBERS OF TABER SHOOTING FOUNDATION

No doubt, most of you are aware that 2018 has brought about many developments on the TSF Shooting Range. If you’ve been out there lately, you will see that the 600 m Range has a shelter over the benches. It was just initiated recently by the SAPRL competition June 16. The 200 m Range shelter is currently under construction, with completion expected in the next couple of weeks. In the parking lot, you can’t miss seeing the new maintenance shed that our industrious Maintenance Committee Volunteers are presently building. This will eventually house the golf carts and the Bobcat as well as other maintenance paraphernalia. The RCMP have installed a Windscreen on the 50 m Range to protect their classroom tent. The Training and Resource Center building has been completely tinned, from roof to ground. Pouring the concrete basement floor, and placing floor beams will be completed this summer as well. Unfortunately, the Skeet/Trap area is still undeveloped, but we are ready to install the houses and equipment as soon as the MD of Taber can direct their equipment resources in that direction. A number of factors, of which we have no control, have necessitated this project delay. Numerous groups have been patronizing our Range, and as such, have generated much needed funds that has allowed us to make the improvements you can see on your next visit.

As you know, many members and businesses and supportive individuals donated $250/Shooting bench when we first started developing the Range. Initially we received funding for 57 benches. To date 42 have been installed. We have 4 on hand, ready to be put in place. We will be ordering 23 more benches, from our very generous business, RUGGED TANKS, that we hope to have built this summer yet. Thanks also to A1FABRICATION for installing the metal legs and seats, as well as    placing them onto the firing lines. This provides us with 69 Shooting benches, once it is all done. As I said earlier, 57 have already been sponsored. This leaves 12 more opportunities for a member to sponsor a Shooting bench. The signage, recognizing the sponsor will be placed above a bench on the Ranges that spots are still available. There is 1 more sponsor needed for the 600 m Range and 11 more needed for the 200 m Range. The signage can accommodate up to 25 letters or numbers  to recognize the sponsor.

Many of you have inquired in the past about sponsoring a Shooting     Bench. If you are interested, please contact ALLEN HERBST TSF VICEPRESIDENT at 403-223-3459. The sponsorship will be done            on a first come/first serve basis. There are numerous other ways that      you, as a member, can contribute to the development of our Range. So,       if it’s not a bench, then volunteer for some of the other numerous tasks    that need your time and talents to complete.
